Ingredients:
- 1 pk (1.5 ounces) instant oatmeal
- 1/4 cup Water
- 1/2 cup Applesauce
- 1/2 cup Teriyaki sauce
- 2 tablespoon Olive oil
- 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 lb Soy protein
Directions:
- Mix water and oatmeal together.
- Add all remaining ingredients, except soy protein. Stir.
- Let sit for 10-20 minutes and add soy.
- Marinate at least one hour. For longer marinating time, place in the refrigerator in a covered container.
- Place in blender and puree. Its color will change from brown to light cream. Form into shapes and place in dehydrator. It dries very fast, so check it often. Enjoy!

I am stumped…. I did the recipe exactly as stated and my end product before dehydrating was too powdery to seem right. I even put this mixture int eh dehydrator and it just cracked. Clearly, I am missing something. I just want to be clear, are all the measurements correct on this site???
Please help me if you can.
what do they mean by 1 lb soy protein. cooking for friend and don’t know if it is a powder or tofu or anything and no one at the stores around here know about soy protein. can anyone tell me what they mean by this ingredient
Hello there
I too would like to know which product you are using for this “1 lb Soy protein” in the Vegetarian Jerky recipe, before I commence to try this out.
Thanks so much for this contribution and I can’t wait to give it a go 🙂
Stephanie
People seem to be confused as to what soy protein is. I’m not positive, but textured vegetable protein (TVP) seems to fit the description. It’s made from soy flour, is very high in protein, and the main ingredient in many store bought vegetarian products, including jerky. Try this link:

They must have meant 1 lb soy “meat,” which can be found in little 1lb tubes for a couple bucks at the grocery. Soy protein is a very heavy powder used in protein smoothies/shakes and some foods. This recipe would be way too dry if using protein instead of “meat.”

Hi I was wondering if there is anything I could use to substitute for the soy protein? Thanks.
